Brivo Meets Industry Standards

Brivo components meet the Open Supervised Device Protocol (OSDP) developed by the Security Industry Association (SIA) – the benchmark for the industry.

In this video, learn how Brivo supports the Security Industry Association in creating standards for interoperability that help businesses secure their facilities at lower cost and with less risk of obsolescence.

As the President and CEO of Brivo, Steve Van Till recognizes the critical role that the Security Industry Association (SIA) can play in helping to develop and promulgate industry standards.

“As the world’s first and largest provider of cloud-based access control and video surveillance,  we realized within the first year of being in the industry that we really needed to be a part of SIA, in order to make a mark on the industry.”

Joe Gittens, the Director of Standards for the Security Industry Association, picks up the story, explaining why robust industry standards are so important – not only for security system providers, but for the companies that rely on their products to secure their facilities.

“It’s very important for the SIA to advocate for good standards within the industry. Most end-users of security products want their products to just work out of the box, to be plug-and-play. Robust standards enable our members to meet their customers’ expectations, and ultimately help open new markets.”

Gittens goes on to explain how the Open Supervised Device Protocol (OSDP), an access control standard, came about. “We started an initiative in 2012 to develop the OSDP. It had been a proprietary standard between two companies. As the association representing the entire industry, we were able to take that into committee, develop recognized standards for it, and open it up to the entire industry.”

Brivo’s Steve Van Till counts the OSDP as a benchmark for the SIA and the industry. “When you look at participation in SIA standards and the new standards that we’ve created, these are landmarks that people are going to know about for many, many years to come. And I think everybody who’s in the organization feels a sense of accomplishment when they do that.”

Participation in SIA is just one more way that Brivo brings Simply Better Security to the industry and to its customers.
