SaaS Talk
Steve Van Till is Brivo’s President and CEO. He serves on the Security Industry Association’s Board of Directors and has been active in its standards efforts. He is a frequent speaker at major industry events including ISC West, TechSec Solutions, ESX, and IP User Group events in both the US and the UK.

As we’ve seen throughout 2009, seemingly all areas of the business world have begun to embrace the Software as a Service model. With its launch of Apps.gov, an “online storefront for federal agencies to quickly browse and purchase cloud-based IT services, for productivity, collaboration, and efficiency,” (The White House Blog) the federal government has thrown its name into the “SaaS hat.”

According to FedScoop!, “The federal government spends more than $75 billion annually on information technology.” Due to its size and security requirements, the government has been reluctant in the past to adopt the SaaS model—being rightfully cautious with its security measures. However, with the advent of Apps.gov, the government is opening up to SaaS and cloud computing. It sees the many features and benefits they both have to offer, including reducing cost, increasing flexibility, paying-as-you-go, etc.

The same FedScoop! article goes on to say, “The federal government’s commitment to cloud computing signals to private industry that smart technology solutions are the future of government.” Another example of this commitment is USA.gov. The General Services Administration (GSA) “wanted to reduce costs and add scalability and flexibility to USA.gov in order to meet emerging citizen needs.” So what did it do? The GSA moved USA.gov to a SaaS-based model. Not only are updates now able to be done in one day (compared a possible six months), the GSA has saved taxpayers $1.7 million annually. (FedScoop!)

More examples of GSA’s move to the cloud could be just around the corner. A poll recently conducted at FOSE, the largest Federal government information technology trade show in the U.S, shows that “the percentage of federal agencies using SaaS will double in one year.” (SaaS: Bailing out government IT) Why the increase? “The same poll found that 47% of agencies represented by FOSE 2009 attendees expect budget cuts due to the economy. SaaS and cloud technology are becoming the only economical way for the government to pursue some IT initiatives.” (SaaS: Bailing out government IT)

As best stated in Jeffrey M. Kaplan’s article, these examples of the government’s movement into the SaaS world “don’t necessarily thrust government into the vanguard of the cloud computing and SaaS movement, but there is no question that these government initiatives are helping to fuel the growth of SaaS and cloud computing.”

This is just the tip of the iceberg. As we’ve learned from 2009, SaaS continues to grow. And now, with the President’s initiative to “lower the cost of government operations while driving innovation within government” (The White House Blog), 2010 is sure to be another SaaS-filled year.

As always, we'd like to hear what you think. What other successful SaaS companies come to mind? How do they differentiate themselves from the pretenders?

Market Spotlight - Property Management

Property managers have special access control needs that are a perfect fit for Brivo’s ACS WebService™. For one thing, it fits their model of charging tenants for services--ACS WebService fees average out to just pennies per square inch. ACS WebService also provides multiple benefits that property managers love:

  • No dedicated PC needed—the property manager and tenants administer the system with a Web browser
  • No need to set up network infrastructure—Internet access is all that’s needed
  • Tiered administration allows them to provide self-service access control for tenants
  • Easy, intuitive Web interface—no complicated software to install and learn
  • Email notifications offer improved crisis response and monitoring
  • Online video and DVR integration—view live and event-related video with OVR WebService™ or an integrated DVR
  • Remote, browser-based access—no more running between properties or making late-night trips to deal with access issues

Brivo also now offers integration with Chamberlain’s ELITE Telephone Entry System; the Brivo ACS is the primary interface, providing a single point of data entry to improve productivity and cut costs. It’s an added bonus for a system that’s already just what Property Managers need! Read more about our Property Management solutions, and be sure to schedule demos for every property manager you find yourself in front of. Seeing is believing!

Success Story - Osgoode Properties

Osgoode Properties, located in the Canadian capital, Ottawa, has installed Brivo ACS WebService™ in a number of its buildings around the city. To date, Osgoode Properties has installed ACS WebService in nine buildings covering 75 doors and managing access for 3,600 users, the majority of whom are residential users but include some commercial tenants as well. Double Vision introduced the Brivo technology to Osgoode and is overseeing the ongoing installation of this advanced, IP-based access control system.

Prior to installing Brivo, Osgoode struggled with three or four different access control software programs—each loaded onto a dedicated computer. The company experienced frequent hard drive crashes resulting in lost data and the need for manual data back-up procedures that were sometimes forgotten. These system shortcomings meant tenants could not be properly serviced and Osgoode was wasting valuable time and money for access control that was not doing the job.

Less than one week after Double Vision’s Carlo Di Leo provided Osgoode management with a demonstration of Brivo ACS WebService, the company began to install Brivo. Osgoode uses the Brivo system to full capacity, particularly leveraging the ACS WebService’s tiered administration feature. Osgoode continues to roll out the Brivo system, with plans to eventually cover 15-18 of their buildings and more than 100 total doors.

Brivo’s Ongoing Rollout of OVR WebService™ Relies on Comprehensive Solution from Dell

Launched in April 2009, OVR WebService—an integrated, online video recorder (OVR) that streams IP video from customer locations to a secure Web hosting facility—is major new addition to Brivo’s award-winning ACS WebService.

Dell was an essential technology partner on the OVR project. Recognizing numerous IT pain points, Dell designed and incorporated several solutions for the project.

  • Storage — In order to tackle the problems of storing massive amounts of video, Dell’s EqualLogic PS5500E frameless Storage Area Network (SAN) was incorporated—offering better performance at one-third the cost of a traditional SAN.
  • Rapid capacity increases — After deploying Dell’s M1000E Blade Enclosure and M805 blades in a virtual cluster, Brivo was able to rapidly deploy servers, reduce power consumption, and maintain the ability to expand capacity.
  • Implementing a dynamic infrastructure — The network was designed to handle increased bandwidth as well as future bandwidth requirements, and the modular design has made expansion and upgrades much easier for Brivo to manage.

Dell’s approach to the design, build, and deployment was intuitive and seamless; and both companies worked together in all aspects of the process including demonstrations to validate each component of the solution.

The 5 Cs of Security as a Service

Physical and logical security is among the top priorities for most organizations today. Having a sound risk management plan for security is as basic as having a sales and financial strategy. However, security seldom contributes to the bottom line and as such Chief Security Officers (CSOs) and Chief Information Officers (CIOs) must find ways to ensure they contribute as much as possible while consuming the fewest resources possible. To understand the potential impact of Security as a Service, we offer a whitepaper that explores the 5 Cs—the five areas that are of strategic importance to all organizations

TechTalk

Wondering how to make sure your Brivo OnSite ACS5000-S or OnSite SE/XE™ system is constantly updated with the current time?

Both OnSite ACS5000-S and OnSite SE/XE systems will attempt to connect to an NTP (Network Time Protocol) server over the internet upon power up.

If the outbound communication to the Internet is not connected or blocked, you will need to have your IT manager set up a path to an NTP server address that is accessible from the OnSite controller system.

The NTP server address setting is entered in the Date and Time screen located in the system section of the interface. Once your system is successfully mapped to an NTP server, it will synchronize its internal clock in order to stay on perfect time and will synchronize the internal clocks in the controllers.
