SaaS
Talk
Steve Van Till is
Brivo’s President and CEO. He serves on the Security Industry
Association’s Board of Directors and has been active in its
standards efforts. He is a frequent speaker at major industry events
including ISC West, TechSec Solutions, ESX, and IP User Group events
in both the US and the UK.
I recently came across a list of
the “Top 25 Most
Popular SaaS Companies,” released by SaaS Directory. According
to their site, the ever-changing list is decided by the “number of
votes a company receives and the amount of times their profile page
has been viewed each month.” This got me to wonder, if there’s a way
to determine the most popular SaaS companies, even if through simple
voting, there must be some sort of outline to consider what makes a
successful SaaS company. A few noteworthy articles, which I’ve
highlighted below, help explain that successful SaaS companies must
1) learn how to avoid commonly made SaaS mistakes and 2) be able to
distinguish themselves as contenders amongst pretenders.
In a recent Datamation article
by Abraham Sultan, “How
to Fail Miserably as a SaaS Company,” Sultan explains how some
“SaaS” companies incorrectly label themselves as SaaS, when in fact
they are SoSaaS, or “Same Old Software as a Service.” Sultan says
that properly delivering Software-as-a-Service “requires fundamental
changes in the way software is written and the way business is run.
Simply ‘putting the application in the cloud’ is not going to cut
it.”
In order to reach success as a
SaaS company, Sultan details a list of mistakes that must be
avoided. These include:
- Misunderstanding
what’s happening to your business—“Understand that the
culture of the company needs to change. The ongoing operational
burden of the application is now your
responsibility.”
- Avoid keeping pace
with change—“Customers are expecting the software to be
updated frequently and to stay on top of current trends both in
your industry as well as with general environmental
events.”
- Prevent
adoption—“It's critical that your customers can start
using your application with minimal to no friction at
all.”
- Be
unreliable—“Understand what will really impacts the
reliability of your application. Architecture, infrastructure,
support mechanisms, and service providers all play a critical role
in your reliability and therefore your
success.”
Now that we have commonly made
SaaS-mistakes in order, we need to be able to separate the “best
from the rest.” In “SaaS
Vendors: Not All Created Equal,” Andre Yee of ebiz details three
primary categories most SaaS companies fall
under.
- Newbies—“SaaS
vendors that have just appeared on the scene in the past couple of
years. They haven't been battle tested on scale, reliability, or
security.”
- Pretenders—“After dragging their heels,
they have given in to the fact that cloud computing isn't just a
fad and they've "reinvented" themselves as a cloud based
application provider.”
- Innovative
Leaders—“SaaS vendors that have been there, done that,
and continue to push the envelope. They've solved the challenging
issues related to gaining scale and reliability. They address
security comprehensively and are SAS 70 Level II audited. They
continue to innovate.”
As you see, becoming a
successful SaaS company is not an overnight process. 2009 marks 10
years of Brivo making SaaS security management simple for thousand
of users around the world. We know which mistakes to avoid, and look
forward to continuing to be an Innovative Leader in access
control.
As always, we'd like to hear
what you think. What other successful SaaS companies come to mind?
How do they differentiate themselves from the
pretenders?

Spotlight - Residential Real Estate
Access control needs of municipalities and utilities can be a
challenge for traditional electronic access control solutions.
Multiple buildings may be difficult to administer centrally and
restricted areas within buildings add a layer of complexity. Even an
access control system's lifecycle can be a burden: when a system
becomes obsolete and a large capital expenditure is needed to
replace it—is there a budget available? Brivo's ACS WebService™
solves the problem
-
Administration from any computer with Internet
access—increase operational efficiency with the ability
to access your account from any computer with a Web
browser—anywhere in the world, at anytime!
-
Telephone entry management—once installed,
the Brivo system is regularly polled for up-to-date resident
telephone numbers, thus ensuring that the facility is both easier
to manage and significantly more secure.
-
Crisis reporting and monitoring—email and
text message notifications alert owners of system events such as
propped doors or invalid access attempts.
-
Online video and DVR integration—view live
and event-related video with OVR WebService™ or an integrated
DVR.
-
Facility lockdown—administrators can remove access privileges and lock
down doors at a moment's notice in the event of an
emergency.
Visit our Brivo solutions page to
see how our award-winning security management solutions span diverse
industries and can be tailored to your unique security
needs.
Success Story - The RADCO
Companies
The
RADCO Companies, an Atlanta-based, coast-to-coast developer
specializing in complicated real estate transactions, has deployed
Brivo ACS WebService™ at The Met at Warner Center in Woodland Hills,
CA, to manage the residential complex’s access control, telephone
entry and visitor management systems, and video surveillance. Gemini
Security is the integrator on this large project.
Prior
to installing Brivo, one of the biggest concerns owners expressed
was the outdated security and lack of an access control system for
its 17 three-story buildings—each with 69 to 179 units per building
and a total of six tennis courts, four pools, a fitness center, spa,
and a 24-hour guard presence.
The
Brivo ACS WebService system manages all main entry doors,
elevators, and the road entrances to the property. At the
guardhouse, automobile entry is monitored through the integrated
access control and video, with resident information displaying
on the screen upon card swipe. Residents have access to the
property and the common areas and amenities, but only to their
residential building; they may not access other resident
buildings. Separate access control groups have also been
created for RADCO staff, service providers, the security guards, and
to control access to various amenities—each group with different
members, access privileges, and times.
The
Met represents the best of what Brivo offers for such large
installations—management for more than 100 doors, 16 telephone entry
systems, a visitor management system at the gatehouse, multiple
cameras at entry/exit points, and more than 2,300 resident user
records with plans to grow up to 5,000.
