SaaS Talk
Steve Van Till is Brivo’s President and CEO. He serves on the Security Industry Association’s Board of Directors and has been active in its standards efforts. He is a frequent speaker at major industry events including ISC West, TechSec Solutions, ESX, and IP User Group events in both the US and the UK.

With Brivo’s tenth anniversary as the leader in Web-hosted access control solutions upon us, it feels like an opportune time to take a look at where the Software-as-as-Service model currently stands. Brivo has proudly been at the forefront of SaaS from the get-go, so we know why it works—with its easy installation, lower total cost of ownership, scalability, etc. Still, some businesses either haven’t adopted the method, or simply aren’t familiar with it. On the other hand, there is more evidence by the day that SaaS is being adopted and accepted.

First, let’s look at some of the reasons SaaS may be slow to adoption. In an August 8, 2009 article, Closing the Gap with SaaS, author Dan Woods provides three forces significantly slowing the SaaS-adoption.
   1) It takes time to switch from on-premise software to SaaS.
   2) The software covers too few areas of business.
   3) Disaster recovery. SaaS vendors’ message to users about their data security is
“trust us.” The response from most IT departments is often “No.”

On the flip-side, Ray Wang of Forrester Research is positive about SaaS acceptance in his article, Moving to a SaaS Offense. “SaaS adoption will move beyond the ‘Tipping Point’ in 2009. Enterprise customers are moving to the on-demand model for a variety of applications as concerns about its shortcomings decline.” Wang believes “…many on-premise vendors appear to be living in denial, hoping that SaaS fails…In reality, these vendors are missing a significant opportunity to grow market share and reposition their companies for future success.” Wang sums up by noting the success of both NetSuite and Salesforce.com as the two on-premise software vendors helping push SaaS into the mainstream.

But what if an organization isn’t ready for the full SaaS commitment? That’s the beauty of the model, says May Kay of E-Commerce Times in The Cloud Is Just the Beginning, “One of the chief benefits of SaaS is that companies don't have to commit to it wholesale. Instead, they can dip their toes in and gradually figure out how best to improve operational efficiency and move the bottom line.”

As always, we’d like to hear what you think. Is your own company using Software-as-a-Service applications, or are your customers asking for the option? If you are a recent SaaS-convert, how does it compare to your former model?

Market Spotlight - Municipalities and Utilities

Access control needs of municipalities and utilities can be a challenge for traditional electronic access control solutions. Multiple buildings may be difficult to administer centrally and restricted areas within buildings add a layer of complexity. Even an access control system's lifecycle can be a burden: when a system becomes obsolete and a large capital expenditure is needed to replace it—is there a budget available? Brivo's ACS WebService™ solves the problem

  • Administration from any computer with Internet access—increase operational efficiency with the ability to access your account from any computer with a Web browser—anywhere in the world, at anytime!
  • One credential for multiple sites—Brivo's wide-area network architecture links all remote sites together in one seamless system with any combination of cellular wireless or broadband control panels. A single individual needs only one credential to enter multiple sites.
  • Online video and DVR integration—view live and event-related video with OVR WebService™ or an integrated DVR.
  • Email notifications and digital records of system activity help improve crisis response and monitoring. Brivo sends immediate notifications of incidents and keeps a digital record of system events available to managers in a secure, online account.
  • Safe delegation of administrative tasks—provides municipal agencies (such as the police) with administration privileges. Administration can be centralized or decentralized.
  • Facility lockdown—administrators can remove access privileges and lock down doors at a moment's notice in the event of an emergency.

In addition, the system's ease-of-use eliminates security lapses that can occur as Administrators come up to speed on using the system. Flexibility and ability to integrate with other systems make Brivo a natural fit for municipalities.

Success Story - Raleigh Police Department

The Raleigh Police Department (RPD) recently installed Brivo ACS WebService™ at its Raleigh, NC, headquarters, a growing number of police substations, and other locations. ASG Security has been working with the RDP as the integrator for this ongoing project.

Prior to installing Brivo, the RPD utilized key pads at the entrances to some of its stations. Officers and staff gained access by entering a code, however if a non-authorized person learned the code, building security was compromised.

A single Brivo system currently manages access for about 1,000 sworn and civilian members of the RPD as well as subcontractors and other personnel, covering more than 30 access doors at 11 locations, including the downtown headquarters.

Visit our website for more about this, and other Brivo success stories.

Video Playback Highlights New ACS WebService Release

With the recent release of ACS WebService 9.2, ACS WebService customers now have the ability to edit group privileges and enable bulk editing permissions for assistant administrators. The new update allows users to quickly filter the list of group permissions for quick display of certain groups of data.

Master and senior administrators are now also able to edit permissions in bulk for accounts with extensive groups and sites. This feature will make it easier for administrators to add the same permissions to multiple sites or groups at a time.

The release also benefits OVR customers, who now have the ability to jump to a certain point in time to view non-event related video. The playback clip can be viewed in
2-minute increments, and may also be downloaded as a file.

Finally, ACS WebService now offers further DVR support with the addition of the Samsung SHR DVR line.
