SaaS
Talk
Steve Van Till
is Brivo’s President and CEO. He serves on the Security Industry
Association’s Board of Directors and has been active in its
standards efforts. He is a frequent speaker at major industry events
including ISC West, TechSec Solutions, ESX, and IP User Group events
in both the US and the UK.
It may start sounding like a broken record, but use
of the Software-as-a-Service model across all industries continues
to increase. A recent Softpedia
article, mentions how software-giant,
Microsoft, is applauding SaaS as a “must-have asset for business
customers.” Corporate VP of Microsoft’s Small and Midmarket
Solutions and Partners organization, Eduardo Rosini, says “Any size
company can benefit from this approach, but for a small business
that hasn’t invested in its own datacenters and doesn’t want to make
that investment right now, software plus services is a good
solution.”
And just what about that SaaS investment—especially
during these tough economic times? Leading information and
technology research and advisory company, Gartner, recently
predicted that “As companies turn to hosted applications to
reduce capital costs during the economic downturn…SaaS revenue will
reach $9.6 billion from $6.6 billion in 2008,” a nearly 22% rise,
“and show consistent growth through 2013.”
Sharon Mertz, a Gartner analyst, recently said SaaS
adoption “continues to grow and evolve within the enterprise
application markets as tighter capital budgets in the current
economic environment demand leaner alternatives, popularity
increases, and interest for platform as a service and cloud
computing grows.”
The SaaS trend is not exclusive to the U.S.,
however. A recent Australian news article reported Gartner’s recent
forecast that “international incomes generated by SaaS will
increase by more than one-fifth this year.” Roger Strain, managing director of South African-based,
Liquid Thought, said: "If you're considering any kind of software
investment, from now on you should always seek to include hosted
services as one of the options you evaluate."
The adoption and investment of SaaS that Mertz and
Strain respectively refer to have been on the rise over the last
five years, with the model being around for over a decade. With
Brivo’s tenth year in Web-hosted access control solutions upon us,
we’ve proudly been at the forefront of Software-as-a-Service from
the get-go. We know why the SaaS model works—ease-of-installation,
lower total cost of ownership, scalability, etc. These factors give
Brivo the ability to offer physical security through an online
service.
As always, we’d like to hear what you think. Is your
own company using Software-as-a-Service applications, or are your
customers asking for the option? If you are a recent SaaS-convert,
how does it compare to your former model?

Spotlight - Property Management
Property managers have special access control needs that are
a perfect fit for Brivo’s ACS WebService™. For one thing, it fits
their model of charging tenants for services— ACS WebService fees
average out to just pennies per square inch. ACS WebService also
provides multiple benefits that property managers
love:
-
No dedicated PC needed—the property
manager and tenants administer the system with a Web
browser
-
No need to set up network
infrastructure—Internet access is all that’s
needed
-
Tiered administration allows them to
provide self-service access control for
tenants
-
Easy, intuitive Web interface—no
complicated software to install and learn
-
Email notifications offer improved crisis
response and monitoring
-
Online video and DVR integration—view live
and event-related video with OVR WebService™ or an integrated
DVR
-
Remote, browser-based
access—no more running between
properties or making late-night trips to deal with access
issues
Brivo also now offers integration with Chamberlain’s ELITE
Telephone Entry System; the Brivo ACS is the primary interface,
providing a single point of data entry to improve productivity and
cut costs. It’s an added bonus for a system that’s already just what
Property Managers need! Read more about our Property
Management solutions, and be sure to schedule demos for every
property manager you find yourself in front of. Seeing is
believing!

Success Story - The Village at
Breckenridge
The
Village at Breckenridge, Colorado (The Village) is a resort
development comprising 235 residential and 28 commercial units.
Nineteen different entities, including both professional property
management firms and individual owners, rent out the various units
throughout the year. Like all of Breckenridge, parking spaces are at
a premium at the Village. The development’s Homeowners’ Association
(HOA) maintains a parking garage that has only 130 spaces to
accommodate residential demand. “Parking spaces are a scarce,
valuable resource,” said Tony Wait, General Manager for The Village
of Breckenridge HOA. “We had to find a way to better utilize this
limited resource and to capture parking revenue, if possible.”
As
Wait and the HOA sought solutions to better manage parking and
improve overall security, Neal Marcus of Securus introduced them to
Brivo’s XML API technology. XML, or eXtensible Markup Language,
allows different systems to exchange data in the XML standard so
they can “understand” one another.
Brivo’s
XML integration enabled the Village to integrate the parking
garage’s access control system with OnPark™, a new online
service created by Brivo’s Professional Services group to manage
reservations and credentials for such common areas as spas, fitness
centers, and in this case, a parking garage. The Village at
Breckenridge Homeowners’ Association (HOA) employed the OnPark
online parking reservation system to improve parking management,
increase revenues to the HOA, enhance security, and make residents a
lot happier.

Brivo and ISC Present IP-based
Access Control Webinar
Don't miss the first webinar in the ISC Education Summer
Learning Series! On Tuesday, June 16, at 2:00 EDT Brivo President
and CEO, Steve Van Till, presents “IP Based Access Control: Which Type is Right for Your
Applications?"
The ISC Education Summer Learning Series features free
webinars on the hottest topics in security. The webinars
are designed to educate the security community on how to perform
better, be more productive, and gain a competitive edge in the
marketplace.
IP-based access control is more than plugging hardware into a
network or using a browser to view and edit data. This session will
profile three alternatives in IP-based access control—embedded,
server-based, and hosted—in terms of: architecture, cost,
performance, and target applications. Three real-market case
studies (one per architecture) will be used to illustrate the
different systems and to discuss the pros and cons on each:
a secure government SCIF, a secondary education campus, and
a national retail chain.
This session will be of interest to security installers
seeking product insights, sales professionals who want to know
where each type of IP access is most appropriate, and end-users
who may be trying to sort out competing vendor
claims.
We hope to 'see' you there!

Trying
to enter new cards into your system? Just like everything Brivo,
it’s easy! There are three pieces of information you will need
before entering new cards into the Brivo database.
1. The card number—usually printed on the
card.
2. The bit format—check the box the cards came
in.
3. The facility code—this should also be on
the box the cards came in.
Once
you have these three pieces of information, click the “Cards” link
on your Brivo account interface:
1. Click “Add Cards”
2.
Choose the correct bit format.
3.
First External Number is the card number you just
calculated.
4. Last
External Number is the last card in a sequence if you want to enter
more than one card at a time. They must be
numerically sequential with no gaps for this to work.
5.
First Internal Number is used rarely. If the external card numbers
are offset from the internal card numbers then
this field is used.
6.
Enter the Facility Code. If an incorrect facility code is entered,
it cannot be edited.
7.
Click “Save” and confirm your data one final time.
Please
visit our FAQs for the complete
process, along with more information.
