SaaS
Talk
Steve Van Till is Brivo’s
President and CEO. He serves on the Security Industry Association’s
Board of Directors and has been active in its standards efforts. He
is a frequent speaker at major industry events including ISC West,
TechSec Solutions, ESX, and IP User Group events in both the US and
the UK.
Due to its scalability, companies
both large and small have begun to move to the Software-as-a-Service
(SaaS) model—and they’re seeing results. A recent Forrester Research
study found that SaaS
vendors posted 40%+ growth rates in the past two quarters "during a
period when most on-premise vendors delivered disappointing
year-over-year quarterly reductions in new license
revenue."
With the scalability SaaS provides,
companies no longer have to guess how much capacity they need or
determine where they should store their information. What’s more,
it’s not just small businesses seeing the value of SaaS; some of the
biggest companies are getting into the mix. Our last Brivo Brief
discussed how Microsoft, the largest source of desktop applications,
has implemented the SaaS model for its Azure services. Now, another
industry icon is doing the same.
General Electrics, the international
conglomerate with more than 325,000 employees, recently began using
an outsourced SaaS system from Aravo Solutions to manage information
for about 500,000 of its suppliers. An article in The Wall Street
Journal, “Big Companies Want Software that Works” (November 6,
2008), discussed how GE chose its new online system after focusing
more on quality of the service itself, and not on how it would be
delivered—more evidence that with its scalability, SaaS is no longer
pigeonholed as only a small businesses solution.
Much like Microsoft and GE’s SaaS systems,
the Brivo ACS WebService™ also offers hassle-free scalability with
an unlimited number of accounts. The investment to get started is
much lower than traditional systems, and unlike the large capital
expenditures that bring unwelcome surprises when hardware needs to
be upgraded, a SaaS-based system spreads payments out to more
manageable and predictable ongoing operating expenses. In the
current climate, your customers are more concerned about their
expenses than ever, and a SaaS-based system like ACS WebService
represents a wise choice for them.
Brivo isn’t the only company watching the
remarkable growth of Software-as-as-Service. The January 26, 2009
MarketWatch article, “Software as a Service Market Will
Expand Rather than Contract Despite the Economic Crisis, IDC Finds,”
reported that the current economic downturn will increase the demand
for the SaaS model. The article stated, “[industry analyst] IDC has
increased its SaaS growth projection for 2009 from 36% growth to 42%
growth over 2008.”
As always, we’d like to hear what you
think. Is your own company using Software-as-a-Service applications?
Are your customers asking for the SaaS option? Is 2009 the Year of
SaaS?

Spotlight - Education
Education institutions must protect
students without hampering their movement and creating a prison-like
school. The right access control system gives school administrators
the flexibility to implement their own unique plans for access and
maintains its integrity across departments, school years, and
facilities. Brivo's access control systems let administrators
accomplish this and more, with:
- No dedicated computers and no
software to buy, install, and maintain
- Lockdown functionality revokes
access privileges with the click of a mouse
- Notifications sent to email or cell
phone keep security officers and administrators informed about
user activity, doors accesses, power outages, and more
- Setting credentials to expire
ensures that guests and contractor credentials expire when visit
or job is complete
- DVR integration leverages CCTV
systems to view specific events or even watch live video
- System flexibility lets
schools implement access control that supports their overall
security plan
Schools have enough to keep them
busy; access control shouldn't be one of them. Brivo's system gives
school officials the flexibility and control they need at a price
that fits nearly any budget. Learn more about Brivo's solutions for Education.
Success Story - Midland Borough
Schools ADT
Midland
Borough Schools in Midland, PA, is a district that chose a
Web-hosted system for their multiple buildings. Prior to installing
Brivo, Midland’s classroom doors opened to the outside, and the back
and loading dock doors were unlocked most times. “There was
basically access to the whole building,” said Kim Kaiser, Dean of
Students/Safety and Security. Over time and as other school
districts confronted security threats, Midland Borough knew things
had to change.
ADT’s
Ray Diesch introduced Kaiser to the Brivo Online Access Control
System, and now the school’s front, back, loading dock, and teacher
access doors are secured and monitored by Brivo ACS. Staff and
teachers with access cards have easy access, but visitors must enter
the school through a single point of entry which is also under video
surveillance. Like Brivo’s other offerings, ACS WebService™ can also
send notifications to cell phones or email based on events like
doors that have been forced open, or to notify when a delivery has
been made.
Kaiser
needed minimal training to get up and running. Students know what
doors they can enter and that certain doors are monitored at all
times. “Our faculty and staff and students feel a whole lot safer,”
Kaiser concluded. |

Brivo
Bits
Take Advantage of ACS WebService™ User Online
Training
Brivo Systems now provides online user training as a
professional service. The new course is designed to give Brivo
dealers the ability to offer complete “hands-on” system
administration training for all users of a newly installed ACS
WebService system.
Upon request by an Authorized Brivo Dealer, a Brivo
representative coordinates and hosts a one hour webinar session,
during which students—new ACS WebService administrators—log into
their new account are guided through system administration
activities specific to their needs and new system. A question and
answer session completes the session, allowing the new system
administrators to ask Brivo and their dealer any remaining questions
they might have.
Only
Authorized Brivo Dealers can request the training. After a new ACS
WebService account has been set up, dealers can make the request by
visiting the Professional Services page and clicking on
“Request Professional Services” or by contacting
your
Regional Sales Manager directly.

News
Every year, Brivo recognizes one employee with the coveted
Brivo Bravo award, which recognizes exemplary customer service and
achievement. The 2008 recipient is Brivo’s Accounting Assistant,
Peter Novick. Peter always goes above and beyond to help customers,
whether the question is about sales orders, bill payment, and even
technical questions. As one of our dealers put it, “Peter is always
extremely helpful and so friendly every time we have called.”
Brivo
also welcomed two new employees recently. If you’re calling in to
Brivo, you may speak to Krystal, our new Operations Administer.
Krystal is originally from Clarksville, MD, and has a Bachelor’s in
Business Administration from Pacific Union College in California.
Lucky for us, Krystal decided to come back East! Patrick is our new
Marketing Communications Manager, bringing to Brivo a Master’s in
Public Relations from Rowan University in New Jersey. Patrick will
be taking on the Brivo Brief as well as all Brivo literature. We’re
hoping that you all have stories to share with him
